What is “research waste” in applied linguistics research? | Interface 4
Researchers have an ethical responsibility to ensure that their work contributes positively to our body of knowledge, builds effectively on what is already known, addresses questions of substantive interest to stakeholder communities, and is effectively disseminated. As with many areas of science in recent years, in the applied linguistics research community, conversations are turning to important methodological considerations to support this aim. This has resulted in increasing attention to the importance of, for example, replication (rather than unnecessary duplication) and evidence synthesis (e.g., Harding & Winke, 2022), stakeholder involvement in research (e.g., Sato et al., 2022); reporting quality and transparency (e.g., Mahoob et al., 2016; de Bruin & Della Salla, 2019); conflicts of interest (e.g., Isbell & Kim, 2023); and widening access to research, both conceptually and physically (Marsden et al., 2019). This shifting terrain makes it necessary to take stock of where we are and where we need to go as a field to continue to improve the transparency, efficiency, accessibility, and quality of applied linguistics research in all phases of the research process.
As a part of that effort, this conceptual paper explores the notion of "avoidable research waste", borrowed from the field of healthcare (Chalmers & Glasziou, 2009), to examine what it can offer to the field of applied linguistics. Drawing on examples from both healthcare and applied linguistics research, we unpack Macleod et al.’s (2004) five categories of research waste: (1) asking the wrong research questions, (2) failing to situate new research in the context of existing research, (3) inefficient research regulation and management, (4) failing to disseminate findings, and (5) poor research reporting practices. We argue that drawing on this typology could help applied linguistics identify and reduce instances of avoidable research waste and, thereby, improve the relevance, quality, and impact of their research.

Synthetic methods are very well established. Indeed, several hundred research syntheses and meta-analyses have been published across a wide range of domains within the applied language sciences. This body of work has yielded numerous insights (Chong & Plonsky, in press). As we might expect in any active empirical arena, a number of innovations in synthetic methods have been introduced in recent...

خیلی ممنون..🙏
Great clarity and understanding. Thank you for this great resource!
Could you share your spreadsheet of data, please?
If there were control and experiment groups, should we perform normality tests for parameters one in the control and one in the experiment? If so, that parameter is normally distributed in control and in experiment then can we say it's normally distributed? Or else we should also check if it is normally distributed in general?
Thanks for your excellent explanation. Where we can get the data set used in this presentation?
Hi, thank you for your video. I have one question about running the T-test after Clustering. Should we consider the normality of the data when running a T-test with generated clusters? Is it important to check if all the data is normally distributed?
A very useful video. A similar video of Jamovi's snowLatent module would be great!
Thank you again! what's the difference betwen the selection of "generalized linear mixed models" and "mixed model" in Jamovi?
thank you! very helpful for my honours project - i Have done multiple stats courses and never considered how ANOVA is basically just a categorial linear regression, cleared some things up! Thanks!
It seems there is no more Wright map option under Mixture Rasch model analysis in Jamovi..
14:01 hello , when I try to run the analysis, pops out “the variable , YXQ3 , is represented by a rectangle in the path diagram, but it is not an observed variable”. What can I do about that? Thank you for the answer in advance ❤ have a nice day 😊
i am still waiting for the other test, if the distribution is not normal and homogeneity variance is violated. KK , please in R
Thanks for uploading this Dr. Will we get a second part?
You still haven't told me how to find the how to get standard deviation The given is 95% I found my mean was 8 (n -1) which is 7. I subtracted my mean from each person and then squared them after that I Added all the squared together now what? Help!!!
I am ganna try it tommorow ,thank u
Thank you, for the interesting Lectures, however, I faced one problem when I calculated the model the error terms were not displayed in the path diagram? therefore I kindly request your help. Regards
Always helpful to refresh the memory👍🌹
Thanks, Dr
very important one. looking for some guide from u and how can contact u
Thanks for the great video. I have a question: Would you happen to have a reference where I could read about the material your presented in the video?
Hello, can you tell me why you took the first 10 items as variables?
Thank you very much for the outstanding presentation. It was incredibly enlightening and provided a wealth of knowledge.
excellent👏👏👏👏
Amazing. Its really useful. Thank you so much.
Looking forward to the second part!
nice explanation
You are an excellent teacher
Could you tell me is there any package or software that can estimate the dynamic mimic model?thanks
Dr. Aryadoust, Thank you for the great videos. I want to ask about the variance explained by Rasch and the Variance by residuals. I can see that your analysis shows a 71% of variance by residuals. Should this be an issue? I will be analyzing a speaking test where the data is not dichotomous. Let me know your thoughts about this.
Hi Doc, can you a tutorial video about Canonical Correlation Analysis in Jamovi? Thank you. 🥹
Thank you very much
Great one indeed. Have one important question. The fit indices shown here, are they structural model fit? Or measurement model fit? I am under the impression that these are probably the structural model fit. If that is the case, then where can I get the measurement model fit indices? Thank you in advance.
Thanks dear Dr. Vahid, I have learned a lot from you. I have a question: in my model, I have two categorical independent variables (groups and time) each with two levels and one continuous covariate (anxiety as a predictor). I followed the same procedure you explained. The point is that anxiety*groups*time is significant, but no postdoc (apart from plots) is generated. How can I know where the difference lies (for instance, whether the slopes [anxiety and dependent variable] of groups significantly differ in time 1 or whether the slopes of groups significantly differ in time 2). Thanks in advance.
thank you so much for sharing the calculator!!!
but how to register in to web science? I found it difficult. there is no sign up. thanks.
Hello. Can PLS-SEM data analysis be used in Jamovi?
This video is good, but the problem is that you seem to be withholding information and compelling viewers to go and watch other videos.
It was great. Thanks for your full explanation ❤
14:22 Hi sir, some people say that the extraction value must be more than 0.5, if it is below that then you have to eliminate that variable. but you make a big deal out of it
As always a really clear walk through, many many thanks
Muchas gracias... thank you so much
thank you very much Sir..
Thank you for this video What software do you use for the presentation?
Thank you very much for this video, it helped a lot. One question: I have SPSS V27, working with R 3.3 or 3.6. I appreciate it if you share how I access IRT packages for R 3.6. I receive the message that "MASS" is not available for version 3.6. Best wishes
Dear Professor Vahid, My question is, at the momemts 0 and 1 of the study all my partipants were evaluated. However, at the moments 2 and 3, some of them drop out of the study. Then, the sum of squares is Type III or I need to change the type? Thank you in adanve for your attention. Best regards
Interesting and also visually appealing 🙏🏻👏🏼. Tnx
👏🏼👏🏼
✨🙌🏼
My correlation matrix result is not showing. Its just showing " this result is non positive definitive ". What to do now?
I have faced the same. issue.. I have found the solution that.. U have to see in which variable it's showing negative. U just have to replace some of the values in that variable so that u could get the right correlation matrix
Thank you. Very helpful.🎉
